Abstract: |
Nonequilibrium charge-transfer characteristics that emerge in Mott insulators (but not in band insulators) are discussed. 1) In the organic charge-transfer complex TTF-CA, transitions between neutral and ionic phases are photoinduced. The ionic-to-neutral transition dynamics show threshold behavior owing to cooperative charge transfers originating from electron correlations in the ionic phase, which are qualitatively different from the neutral-to-ionic transition dynamics showing almost linear behavior. 2) Field-effect transistors are fabricated on organic single crystals of different insulators. The field-effect characteristics are ambipolar if the insulator is a Mott insulator, while they are generally unipolar if it is a band insulator. This difference originates from dynamic correlations between electronic motion inside the insulator and that at the electrode (metal)/insulator interfaces. This difference therefore generally appears in charge transport through metal/insulator interfaces if the electronic motion is coherent.
