Abstract:

Concepts of symmetry breaking supply basic understanding of physical phases supplemented by working variables as local order parameters. Local magnetization, charge density and amplitude of Cooper pairing are typical examples. However, recent studies in decades clarify many of interesting quantum phases are not well described by this classical concept. Quantum liquids as quantum disordered phases, such as frustrated spin systems, Haldane spin systems and quantum Hall states are typical examples. Strong quantum fluctuations and low dimensionality prevent from formation of conventional local orders.

We are proposing two novel schemes to classify the gapped quantum liquids. One is to define a quantum local order parameter using geometrical phases as the Berry phase. It is gauge dependent by the unitary transformation since the Berry phase is a quantum interference between two states with infinitesimal difference, which is to be compared with a fact that the classical observables are inevitably unitary invariant since they are given by expectation values of some hermite operators. The other is an entanglement entropy (EE), which reflects spatial entanglement of some quantum ground state. It is evaluated by a reduced density matrix defined by a ground state density matrix of the pure state.
