Abstract:

Search for excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers in two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnets is one of the central challenges in modern condensed-matter physics. As a possible realization of fractionalization, the spatially anisotropic frustrated antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 has attracted much attention. In this material, power-law behaviors of dynamical structure factors as well as 2D dispersion relations were observed [1], which strongly suggests that particles carrying fractional quantum numbers, spinons, appear in 2D antiferromagnets. Although many theories have been applied to this issue, no consistent interpretations had been obtained. Here, we report the results which explain the dynamical features consistently and quantitatively without using any phenomenological parameters, obtained by applying a weak-coupling approach from the one-dimensional (1D) limit with use of exact solutions in 1D [2].

We found that spatially anisotropic frustrated antiferromagnets show the following three dynamical features depending on the momentum [2]: (1) 1D spinons which are little affected by interchain interactions, (2) bound states of spinons and (3) incoherent excitations. The power-law behaviors observed in Cs2CuCl4 can be understood as the properties of 1D spinons. Also, the 2D dispersion relations are understood by the formation of bound states due to interchain exchange processes.

In magnetic fields, we found that bound states of particles carrying fractional quantum numbers in magnetic fields, i.e. psinons and antipsinons, and particles representing strings in the Bethe ansatz appear in spatially anisotropic frustrated antiferromagnets. Through comparison with experimental results in magnetic fields, we would also like to discuss the crossover from 1D spinon to 2D magnon pictures in magnetic fields.
