Title: Study of Morphotropic Phase Boundary in Relaxor Ferroelectrics by Using an Effective Spin Model
Speaker: Dr. Yusuke Tomita (ISSP, University of Tokyo)
Abstract:

"Relaxor" is a term referring to a group of ferroelectrics which exhibit a characteristic slow relaxation. Since relaxors are adequate material for processing ferroelectric devices, they are regarded as important industrial materials. Though, they are recognized as important materials, promotion of fundamental studies is not sufficient, so that little understanding of relaxors has been obtained.

One of the reasons for prohibiting the progress of the fundamental studies is lack of a simple model such as Ising model in the study of magnetics. Against this background, we draw up guidelines that electric dipoles in ferroelectrics play dominant roles, and their behavior determines properties of the ferroelectrics. Under the guidelines, we constructed a simple spin model of relaxor ferroelectrics, and we have shown that our effective spin approach is useful for studying relaxor ferroelectrics [1, 2].

In the seminar, I will present a brief review of relaxors in the first half of the seminar. In the last half of the seminar, I will give a talk about an effective spin model for studying the morphotropic phase boundary in relaxors. It is known that solid solutions of relaxors and ferroelectrics exhibit a large dielectric response on the phase boundary between a tetragonal and a rhombohedral phases. I will discuss about how our spin model captures the feature of a large dielectric response in the solid solutions.
